The next Bamako Encounters will take place from 1st December 2019 to 31st January 2020. Igo Diarra and Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung will be Managing Director and Artistic Director, respectively.
Igo Diarra succeeds Samuel Sidibé as General Delegate of the Biennial. Founder and Director of the Médina Gallery in Bamako, Igo Diarra is the founder of the Bamako "Kanla Kadi" International Festival of Youth Literature and the Bamako Symposium arts summer school. Founder of Balani's Editions, he has edited several works for children, including fairy tales, comics, novels and catalogues. Member of the OMEL - an organization of publishers from Mali - he recently created and edited a cultural entrepreneurship game set in Mali and Bamako. An active member of several associations, he was the first regional director in West Africa for Arterial Network and is a founding member of the Kya network.
Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung succeeds Marie-Anne Yemsi as artistic director of the 12th edition of the Biennial. Born in Yaounde, Cameroon, Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung is an independent curator, artistic director and founder of SAVVY Contemporary in Berlin. He was the general curator for Documenta 14 in Athens and Kassel and a guest curator at the Dakar Biennial in 2018. With the “Miracle Workers Collective”, he will also be curator of the Finnish Pavilion at the Venice Biennial. He was also chosen as artistic director of the Sonsbeek Quadrennial to be held in 2020 in Arnhem, Netherlands.
Since its creation in 1994 the Biennial, founded by the photographers Françoise Huguier and Bernard Descamps, has always benefited from the support of French partners. In 2019, the Institut français and the Institut français of Mali will help organise the event through financial support and a cultural engineering contribution.
